A case in point

In my experience the vast majority of people get work through contacts.
There is no escaping the requirement to work, we have to work to survive despite the protestations of the right that the welfare state provides a standard of living comparable to a holiday camp (when did they last try it?). A great way to lose total control of your life is to fall into the 'net' of the welfare state.
A manager from one company I worked for got another management post nearby when he became redundant. A redundancy round occurred during this period and the majority of those who fell victim found work with this ex manager. I, who had been made redundant at the same time, was not employed by him. I was effectively black-listed. The remaining unemployed members of the work force got back into employment through companies they had worked for previously or historic colleagues. To my knowledge not one found work through cold calling or agencies.
The 'who you know' mantra is alive and well. Only last night a young man told me he found work at his new firm through his mother who was a receptionist there.
So for the most part agencies, qualifications, experience, the shield of equal opportunity, and etc, these count for little in the search for work - the main driver is who-you-know.

Do we know you?

In future posts we will discuss how gi can circumvent this.
